Idemudia Chess Competition: Winners Emerge, Bag Cash Prizes Ranging from N10000 to N40000

Winners at the recently concluded chess competition for secondary school students in Edo State received cash prizes for their participation and victory in the game.

The event which was organized by members of the Idemudia Ogunbor family in memory of the late Barrister Kehinde Cletus Idemudia, was held at the premises of Swift Education Centre in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

Until his death in May 2013, Barrister Idemudia was a retired Permanent Secretary from the Edo State civil service.

He was a devoted Christian of the catholic faith. His astute management of human and financial resources was rewarded with a royal beads  by the late Oba Erediauwa, for the role he played in organizing the activities of the 1979 coronation ceremony of the late Benin monarch.

The game featured 39 students from five secondary schools across the state and cash prices ranging from N40,000 N30,000 N20,000 to N10,000 were won by the four best students in the boys’ and girls’ category.

A total of five rounds was played with a time control of 20 minutes per player. Two tie break matches were played to determine the winner for the boys category and for the second and third places in the girls category.

The fourth position had multiple winners and so in line with chess custom, the prize allocated for the fourth position was shared equally amongst the fourth-place winners.

Winners and their schools were presented with medals and trophies while  all participants and officials received certificates.

For the record, Divine Akinrogunde defeated Richy Osaware to come tops in the boys category, while Esther Sonyaolu defeated Victoria Oyakhilome to come first in the girls category.
