FG Moves to Stabilise Poultry Prices Nationwide

The Federal Government has announced plans to curb the escalating prices of poultry products in the country as part of its broader efforts to ensure affordability and availability of poultry products nationwide.

The Honourable Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha, disclosed this when the National Leadership of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), led by its President, Sunday Ezeobiora, paid a courtesy visit to the Ministry in Abuja on Monday, 27th April, 2026.

The Minister said that government approach is to target key cost drivers in the poultry value chain—particularly feed, energy, and inputs—while expanding support for smallholder producers.

He added that , this administration’s proposed “Feed the Hungry Children” programme will further stimulate demand for eggs and processed meats, creating new market opportunities for producers.

Addressing concerns raised by PAN, Mukhtar, called for data-driven solutions and greater transparency across the industry.

To support evidence-based policy, he directed the association to submit a comprehensive national inventory of hatcheries, detailing locations, ownership, and production capacity.

He emphasised that improved data will enable the government to calibrate incentives, close supply gaps, and ensure a sustainable ratio between population needs and poultry output.

The Federal Government will also explore targeted interventions to ease input costs, including energy solutions and streamline import processes for essential inputs, while maintaining standards and strengthening domestic capability, he stated.

“In several countries, strategic subsidies supports food availability to meet up with high demand for products

We will pursue policies that lower production costs without compromising quality or competitiveness,” the Minister said.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to a stable regulatory environment, stronger value chains, and partnerships that would attract investment into processing, storage, and logistics.

Earlier, the President of the Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN), Sunday Ezeobiora, highlighted key challenges facing the sector, such as , inadequate supply of pullets for the table egg industry, rising costs of feed and production inputs, disease management constraints, limited access to finance, and the need for more supportive government policies to boost local production.

He commended the Federal Government for its commitment to the sector, noting that recent policy interventions demonstrate strong resolve to reposition poultry production as a major pillar of Nigeria’s livestock economy.

Ezeobiora expressed appreciation for the Federal Government’s engagement, by reaffirming the association’s commitment to working collaboratively to advance poultry production and ensure food security in Nigeria.
