Citizens’ Participation in Governance: Nigeria, Advancing Significantly – Sanjay Pradhan

The Open Government Partnership CEO, Sanjay Pradhan, has lauded the Nigerian Government for being one of the top three countries to have made the most significant advancement in opening up the budget through disclosure and citizens’ participation in the budget process at the federal level.

While Speaking at a high level engagement with Secretary to Government of the Federation of Nigeria, Boss Mustapha, in Abuja, on Tuesday, 26th July 2022, Pradhan noted that Nigeria stands out as one of the countries out of the 77 that has made a large amount of progress through OGP.

The OGP CEO revealed that the team’s visit to Nigeria before the 2023 general elections, is for two objectives; to celebrate and recognize the considerable amount of gains Nigeria has made in the last 6 years since she joined OGP, and to cement those gains that the government have made in open government.

According to him, “Nigeria is the 70th country to join OGP, and Since 2016 when Nigeria joined OGP I have come to Nigeria more than any of the 77 countries that are our members. I can honestly say that Nigeria stands out as one of the countries out of the 77 that have made a large amount of progress.”

“Nigeria has prepared two Action Plans and there is a third one that will be prepared before the election, when you look at the commitments of the Two NAPS, they represent a comprehensive and ambitious open government agenda across the 77 countries, and highlights it’s accomplishments.” He added.

The OGP boss however expressed gratitude to the SGF, “I should really commend Mustafa, who has been an incredible leader. We showcase him in all our global policies. He’s one of our leading ministers across the partnership.” He lauded.
