Nigerian President Bola Tinubu Suspends Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Betta Edu


…Makes History as First Tinubu Minister to be Suspended


President Tinubu has announced the suspension of the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu from office, with immediate effect, following allegations of financial misconduct.

This is in line with the avowed commitment of the president to uphold the highest standards of integrity, transparency and accountability of the management of the commonwealth of Nigeria.

Concurrently, the President has ordered the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFFC) to undertake a comprehensive investigation into all financial transactions associated with the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, as well as affiliated agencies.

Meanwhile,the Minister has been directed to handover to the Permanent Secretary while under strict instructions to cooperate with the investigating authorities in the course of the inquiry.

In a related development, President Timubu has gone a step further to set up a panel under the lead of the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Wale Edun, which is to conduct a comprehensive diagnostic assessment of the financial architecture and framework of the social investment programmes, with a view to instituting reforms to strengthen the operating system and restore public trust in the institutions. This directive also takes immediate effect, to underscore the urgency of the matter.
