History was made recently when the flag of Senegal was hoisted at the West African Telecommunication Regulator Assembly (WATRA) secretariat in Abuja.
The hoisting of the flag which took place on Thursday 16th September 2021 was jointly performed by Professor Garba Danbatta the Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission and Senegal’s Ambassador to Nigeria, His Excellency Babacar Matar Ndiaye.
In his welcome address to the event the Executive Secretary of WATRA, Aliyu Yusuf Aboki, said he was extremely delighted to have the chairman of WATRA and the ambassador at the ceremony which according to him is an indication of the importance that “policy makers and political authorities in Africa attach to the digital economy as a means of promoting investment, jobs and growth”.
He also used the opportunity to express the gratitude of the 16 member countries of the body for hosting and supporting the assembly.
Danbatta on his part, stressed the significance of the event saying “it symbolizes the cohesion taking place in WATRA.
He added that the increasing demonstration of cooperation and cohesion by the member states signifies unflinching commitment to harnessing ICT resources to improve the quality of life of people of the sub-region.
In the same spirit, the Senegalese Ambassador, Ndiaye, described the ceremony as a happy occasion adding that it was gratifying to gather at WATRA secretariat to hoist the flag of Senegal alongside those of other member states.
He noted his country’s consistency in making remarkable contributions to ECOWAS and other regional bodies and stated his country’s readiness to work within the political and economic framework of ECOWAS to streamline challenges facing regulators like WATRA.
